The Lutheran Church has a long history of interest in the education of children, dating back to the 16th Century. Dr Martin Luther himself wrote to the officials of several cities urging them to provide education to boys and girls so that they could develop and prosper as members of society and of the Church.
Lutheran settlers to Canada often started a school as soon as they started a congregation. The oldest Lutheran school in Alberta, St Matthew’s at Stony Plain, has been in operation for over a century. Concordia University College and Concordia Collegiate have a long and well recognized history in the city of Edmonton.
King of Kings Lutheran School is the latest development in that long tradition. From 1994 until the end of the 2009/10 school year it was known as Faith Lutheran School, located in Beverly and operated by the Edmonton Lutheran School Society.
Faith Lutheran School was established by the society in the spring of 1994 . A principal and teachers were engaged, and operation began in the 1995/1996 School year. After two years in temporary rented facilities to the south of the river, the school moved to the Beverly site in August of 1997.
In September 2009, the King of Kings Lutheran Church decided to start a Lutheran Elementary School, and invited the Society to relocate Faith Lutheran School to St Albert. The school is to become King of Kings Lutheran School and begin operations in St Albert in September 2010.
